2022 – 2023 Texas Scholastic Online Quick Open Chess Championships

An online, 6 round USCF quick-rated chess tournament in ELEVEN SECTIONS on Saturday, October 29, 2022 sponsored by the Texas Chess Association. This quick event is for all scholastic players in grades K thru 12, regardless of residence. Visit the EVENT WEBSITE for full details and online registration.

Basics:
Six (6) Rounds — G/15 + 2-second increment

Round Times (Central Time Zone):
10am — 11am — 12noon — 1pm — 2pm — 3pm

11 SECTIONS
High School Championship (Grade 9 – 12)
High School JV (U1000; Grade 9 – 12)
Middle School Championship (Grade  6 – 8)
Middle School JV (U900; Grade 6 – 8)
Middle School Novice (U600; Grade 6 – 8)
Elementary School Championship (Grade K – 5)
Elementary School JV (U800; Grade K – 5)
Elementary School Novice (U500; Grade K – 5)
Primary School Championship (Grade K – 3)
Primary School JV (U600; Grade K – 3)
K – 1 Championship (Grade Pre-K – 1)

Playing up is only allowed within the same grade range.

October 2022 US Rating Supplement will be used.  The highest of the Over-the-Board, Online Regular, and Quick ratings determines eligibility for section and prizes.  

 PRIZES
Personalized plaques will be awarded to the Top 8 Individuals and Top 3 Teams in each section.  Prizes will be increased based on registrations for each section, at the rate of one extra award for each 10 entries exceeding 80 in any one section.  For example, if a section has 120 players then the top 12 players will receive prizes.  

Team scores
A team must have a minimum of two players to be eligible for team prizes.  There is no maximum number of students who may play for a team.  Only the top four scores count for team standings  and the top four players in a team will get team awards.

The top Texas player in each section will be recognized as the Texas Champion.

ENTRY FEE
$35 by Midnight October 17; $42 by Midnight October 24; $50 by 1am (Central) October 28.

No entries accepted after 1am Central, October 28th.
No refunds after 1am Central, October 28th.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
– US Chess Membership, expiring on or after 10/31/2022, required.  Players with no current US Chess membership may be able to obtain a voucher membership at a reduced rate, through US Chess Voucher Membership.  The cost of the voucher US Chess membership is $9.83.

– All games will be played on Chess.com.  All players must have a chess.com account in good standing (free account is sufficient).  Any previously closed accounts must be disclosed to the Tournament Organizers prior to the tournament.

– There will be a “Town Hall” meeting at 7pm (Central) on Friday 10/28;  invitation sent via email on Thursday 10/27.  All players/parents are encouraged to attend and get answers to their questions. 

–  Each player will be required to join a Zoom meeting with an active side-view camera showing them and their computer.  Specific requirements for this video feed are listed on the EVENT WEBSITE.

ACC USCF G/90 Standard Swiss

This slow swiss takes place over 4 weeks, with games on September 24th, October 1st, and October 8th. G/90 with 30 sec. increment per move. 3 round Swiss. Sections dependent on turnout. EF: $15.00 all. Online registration and payment available soon.

USCF membership must not expire before October 31, 2022.

Austin Chess Club is a wonderful atmosphere for the mature, experienced chess player. The event has the potential to run late. Scholastic players are welcome, but expected to play quiet, serious chess. One round may last upwards of 4 hours.

Last chance registration happens onsite 3:00-3:45pm on September 24th. No pre-registration for round 1 is necessary. Email pre-registration is accepted; however, online payment (available soon) is preferred! If you email to register, you must show up and pay no later than 3:45pm! First round begins at 4pm. Please be on time! Participants who wish to enter the tournament late may email Austin Chess Club. Late entry must be made (emailed) before 10am on Saturday, October 1st to secure a round 2 pairing.

August Rapid 8/13/22 – Chess for Trees

Chess For Trees is a nonprofit.

The tournament will consist of a K-5 section and a K-12 section. There will be trophy prizes for both sections. The format of the tournament will be 5 Round Swiss – 15 minutes with 2 second increment. The tournament will be hosted on chess.com. You will need a chess.com account to play the tournament, and you must be a current USCF member.

Instructions on how to create chess.com account, register to compete in USCF online rated events, and linking your USCF profile to your chess.com username can be found on the tournament website.

Registration Fee: $10
Registration closes on August 11th.

Prizes
Top 3 in each section will get trophies.  Number of trophies given out may increase based on the number of participants.

Fair Play
Tournament results will be finalized after 1-2 weeks in order to give chess.com time to do a fair play analysis. If chess.com determines you have cheated then you will not be eligible for any prizes and your chess.com account might be closed. Chess.com’s decision is final.

Technical Difficulties
Unfortunately due to the nature of virtual tournaments nothing can be done if you lose a match or face any other difficulties due to internet issues and other technical difficulties. Note: You will not be refunded for any loss due to technical difficulties.

More Instructions
Once you have registered and paid the registration fee of $10 please join the “Chess For Trees” club on chess.com. The club is private.

Note: Only people who have paid the registration fee will be admitted to the club.

On the day of the tournament sign into your chess.com account and go to https://www.chess.com/live and then on the tournaments tab you should see our tournament. Please join the tournament and wait for the rounds to start. The next round will start after all games are finished. The whole tournament will last for no more than 3-4 hours.

Please only join the tournament for your section, as if you fail to do this then you will end up playing the wrong section, and will not be counted for prizes

If you’re playing the K-5 section then join the August Rapid – K-5 tournament, and if you’re playing in the K-12 section join the August Rapid – K-12 tournament.

Please note:
Both sections will start at 11 AM CST on 8/13.

To pay for your tournament entry, please visit the event page. A payment link is located at the bottom. If the tournament is cancelled for any reason, all entries be refunded 100% . If you decide to withdraw your entry fee will be refunded as long as you contact the organizer by email no later than 8/11.
