Mathnasium Summer Chess Camp #1 – Wild Openings

Description: A full-day, week-long chess camp, hosted by the Cedar Park Mathnasium from June 3-8, 2024.  Featuring Certified National Master Paul Chaplin. All scholastic players are invited to register!

Each camp features five exciting days of an immersive chess environment and a fun-filled focus on a special featurette highlight (description below). Wild Openings: With thousands of named variations available, students will discover the joy of preparing surprises for their opponents with tricky and uncharted play. Not just one-trick or trap-only opening ideas, but a deeper uncovering of useful ideas will be explored.

Austin Monthly Action Tournament – August

Rated 4SS in 2 sections; G/30, d5. This event takes place on August 20, 2023 and is open to all players with a valid USCF membership.

    These are tentative times. If all games in a section end, the next round will begin earlier.

Limit two half-point byes. Byes must be committed 1 hr before Round 2.

Entry Fee

$40 by 8/17
$45 on or after 8/18 (on-site registration closes 1 hour before Round 1).

Withdrawals requested via email before NOON on Friday 8/18/23 are eligible for a refund (minus a $10 processing fee). Full credit can be applied to any future tournament. No refunds for USCF memberships after purchased from USCF.

North Austin Summer Chess Camp with Gary Gaiffe

Description: A full day, week-long chess camp open to all scholastic chess players, organized and run by local expert Gary Gaiffe. (This camp replaces the NYOS chess camp scheduled for the same week.)

Campers will be broken into skill level groups.  Different topics will be covered depending on which group the camper is in.  From tactics to positional play, game analysis to variant play, the camp will be both instructional and entertaining.  The final day will include a camp-wide tournament.

Dates and Times:  July 17-21; 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Austin Grandmaster Chess Academy In-Person USCF Rated Tournament

In-Person USCF Rated Tournament 

We are hosting another Austin Grandmaster Chess Academy In-Person USCF Rated Tournament on April 8, 2023 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  USCF Membership requried.  Free Parking.  Capacity: 60 players!

TOURNAMENT STYLE:
All players will be divided into two sections:
SECTION A: 1,000+ USCF rated
SECTION B: Under 1,000 USCF rated and/or unrated.
**If there are not enough players in a given section, we reserve the right to merge them**

TIME CONTROL:
● G/40, d5.
● 40 minutes per player with a 5-second delay.

RATING INFORMATION:
● March official USCF ratings will be used.
● Unofficial USCF ratings will be used if unrated or to play in a
higher section.
● Players must reveal foreign, FIDE, and other over-the-board
ratings. These ratings will be adjusted, if necessary, and may be
used if they are higher than USCF ratings.

4-Round Swiss System Schedule
●  1st round: 10:00 AM
●  2nd round: 11:30 AM
●  Lunch break: 1:00 PM
●  3rd round: 2:00 PM.
●  4th round: 3:30 PM.
●  Closing ceremony: After the last game finishes.
NOTE: Half-point byes are acceptable for all rounds, limit 1. Must commit before the 1st round.

PLAYERS MAY NOT POSSESS CELL PHONES DURING THE TOURNAMENT. Any violators may be subject to disqualification and forfeiture.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you do not wish to participate in our tournament after paying the entry fee, please email us at info@austin-chess.com no later than 24 hours in advance for a $20 refund. We reserve the right to charge a $10 service fee for cancellations. 

WITHDRAWAL POLICY: If you would like to withdraw from the tournament after it begins, please alert the tournament director and sign a withdrawal form in the lobby prior to leaving the premises. 

NO refunds will be issued after the tournament begins. 

NO-SHOW POLICY: There are NO refunds or credit for players who do not show up for their scheduled tournament matches.

St Andrews Chess Camp

Description: A full-day, week-long chess camp, hosted by St. Andrew’s Episcopal School at their Shoal Creek Campus from June 26-June 30, 2023.  The camp will be run by Gary Gaiffe and a team of local chess instructors. All scholastic players are invited to register!

Target audience: kids grades 2 – 8

Chess Camp includes formal instruction and play, plus a camp-wide tournament at the end of the week! Beginners learn basic chess theory, game objectives, piece movement, game and tournament rules. Intermediates study chess analysis and decision-making, tactics, checkmate patterns and tournament strategies. Advanced students are taught more sophisticated chess techniques and decision-making, complex tactics, calculated and intuitive sacrifices, opening and endgame analysis.
